Jay Calderin
Jay Calderin is the Director of Creative Marketing at the School of Fashion
Design in Boston, a position that allows him to be involved in programming
development, implement community outreach initiatives, function as an industry
liaison, and serve as a curator of the A Gallery: Boston's Fashion Art Space. He
has developed special events, fashion shows and exhibits featuring the work of
Hispanic fashion professionals and artists in the Boston area as a part of Estilo Latino in the A Gallery during Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
As an instructor at the School of Fashion Design he has taught sketching,
fashion history, computer aided design, professional development and high school
prep program courses. He also teaches a digital portfolio course at
the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and has served as an instructor
at Burdett College and Lasell College. His pursuits as a professional coach and
motivational speaker have afforded him opportunities to share his ideas at
institutions including Harvard University, Wellesley College, Lesley University,
Tufts University, Babson College, Bay State College, the Boston Public Library
and the Hatch Festival in Bozeman, Montana.
In 1995 he founded and became the Executive Director of Boston Fashion Week,
which has become an integral part of building a community for local fashion
professionals and a highly anticipated annual celebration of the Boston fashion
industry. The week of fashion related events throughout Greater Boston serves as
a platform for both established industry professionals and aspiring newcomers to
showcase the great wealth of local talent.
He has developed the Art & Industry of Fashion series for the Boston Center for
Adult Education as a way to introduce new audiences to the world fashion. In
addition to this class he moderates an annual panel discussion with industry
leaders at the BCAE called the Style Summit, and recently introduced Fashion
Prep, a similar event designed for teenagers which takes place at the Boston
Public Library.
Civic
Involvement & Accomplishments
Throughout his career he has maintained a passionate dedication to the
importance of giving back to the community. He has been responsible for fashion
exhibitions and special events in public spaces throughout Boston from the time
he relocated to Boston in 1989.
He became a big brother with Big Brothers of Massachusetts Bay and has been a
mentor for the past eight years.
He was recently elected as Regional Director of Fashion Group International of
Boston for the 2009/2010 term.
He is a member of the Latino Professional Network.
He is a member of Massachusetts Teachers Association.
He received Special Recognition for Contributions to the Fashion Industry from
the Massachusetts College of Art in 2001.

Personal Accomplishments
In his capacity as a fashion designer his work has graced the pages of Vogue,
Elle, the Boston Globe and the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine. Dance Magazine also
noted his work as costumer for the dance company Peter DiMuro Performance
Associates.
He was an accredited fashion editor/press photographer at the 7th On Sixth
Bryant Park Fashion Shows in New York City for seven years. His more avant-garde
art photography has been featured in a series of shows at the Tristan Gallery in
Provincetown Massachusetts, which represented him as an artist on Cape Cod.
Also a published writer he authored an introduction for the book "Fashion &
Color" by Mary Garthe, as well as many articles and columns for newspapers,
magazines and the internet including the Boston Globe's Fashion Boston Magazine,
Where Magazine, Newbury Street & Back Bay Guide and America Online's Digital
City Boston. He has also been a fashion commentator on WCVB-TV's "Chronicle"
and CN8's "Backstage with Barry Nolan".
His dedication to education was recognized in Martha Stewart's Body + Soul
magazine in a feature article by Cheryl Richardson about "Finding Your Passion".
He is currently working on his first book "Fit, Form and Fashion" for
Rockport Publishers, a handbook for fashion designers that serves as a primer
for newcomers and a reference guide for professionals, scheduled to be released
October 2009. |
