ART
& INDUSTRY OF FASHION
Make an
informed decision about embarking on a move into a fashion career
with this introduction to both the creative and business sides of
style. This five-week series with fashionWEEK founder and
executive director Jay Calderin covers the many facets of the
fashion industry. Get basic information about specific aspects of
the fashion industry, a professional's perspective on the subject,
and a forum where you can begin to explore your particular
interests. Begin with history, research, and forecasting, and talk
about elements of design. Move along to sketching--croquis,
clothes, and color--and production--pattern making, draping,
cutting, sewing, and finishing. Week three focuses on audience
identification and fashion show production. Then, discuss branding
and marketing (including press, publicity, promotion, and
packaging), and multimedia (including video, photography,
Internet, graphics, and journalism). Conclude with portfolio
development and career path strategies, and discover professional
development options like networks and education. The format of the
weekly seminars includes demonstrations and resource guides as
well as question and answer periods. Be prepared to take notes and
ask questions to get the most out of this insider's view of the
big picture of fashion.

SUMMIT: Working In Fashion
Don't
miss this opportunity to meet leading members of the local fashion
community! StyleSUMMIT provides a unique opportunity for everyone
to access the great wealth of Boston fashion talent. StyleSUMMIT
2003 is the third annual fashionWEEK BOSTON forum offered to
educators, students, and anyone interested in the fashion industry
in the Gamble Mansion's Louis XV ballroom. Jay Calderin,
fashionWEEK's founder and executive director, moderates a panel
discussion featuring professionals from various aspects of the
fashion industry sharing their experiences and insights about
launching a fashion career. Panelists include representatives from
fields including design, photography, modeling, and beauty. Visit
www.bcae.org or fashionweek.org for a confirmed list of panelists
after October 6. This event is designed as a counterpart to the
fashionWEEK exhibition at the Boston Public Library, also entitled
"Working in Fashion." A percentage of the proceeds
benefit the Vision Awards Scholarship Fund.
